ï ¿ ¼Hempstead High School Bless Me, Ultima LAP Theresa Coleman English 12AP Mr. Amoroso September 26, 2016 ï ¿ ¼Death engenders ambivalence while questions lead to a tenuous connection with God. Death can galvanize the mind to a point of questioning that is so dangerous, it can rob from your innocence. This is true for children such as Antonio from the novel Bless Me Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya. As a child, Antonio was spoon fed a false sense of reality in which he would be a priest but death cleared his vision to the real world. In which good people die and God isn t just or almighty. Anaya expertly crafted the novel in a way that the death of characters such as Lupito, Narciso, and Florence foreshadow that ambivalence in Antonio. Death at the time of birth and tranquility breeds indecision. Lupito was a good man. Lupito s mind was encapsulated with the pains of war while Antonio s heart collapsed with a myriad of questions. The sin of murder is egregious for the sane but the sins of the insane are enigmatic. Anaya uses the motif of the presence of the water to show the rising waves of ambivalence.Catholics believe we are born into sin and water can wash away the sins carved into our souls. The purity of the water of the llano was stained with tormented blood. Akin to how the tormented blood flowed into the river, Antonio’s innocence flowed out of his soul. Water is a sign of birth in religion.
