BUSINESS CYCLE A business cycle is the periodic but irregular up and down movements in economic activity, measured by fluctuations in real GDP or gross domestic product and other macroeconomics variables. It is not a predictable or repeating phenomenon like the ticking of a second hand on a clock. Its timing is random and unpredictable. A business cycle describes the phases of growth and decline in an economy. A business cycle is a sequence of four: contraction, trough, expansion and peak. A contraction is a slowdown in the pace of economic activity, a trough is the lower turning point of a business cycle, usually a recession, where a contraction eventually turns into an expansion, expansion is a speedup in the pace of economic activity, and finally the peak which is the upper turning of a business cycle. ?The goal of economic policy is to keep the economy in a healthy growth rate ? fast enough to create jobs for everyone who wants one, but slow enough to avoid inflation. Unfortunately, life is com plex and many factors can cause an economy to spin out of control, or settle into a depression. The most important, factor is confidence ? that of investors, consumers, businesses and politicians. The economy grows when there is confidence in the future and in policymakers, and does the opposite when confidence drops?, states Kimberly Amadeo of Guide.com. The National Bureau of Economic Research or NBER analyzes economic indicators to determine the phases of the business cycle. The BCDC or Business Cycle Dating Committee uses quarterly GDP growth rates as the primary indicator of economic activity. The Bureau also uses monthly figures, such as employment, real personal income, industrial production and retail sales. Supply and demand can affect the business cycle. Consumers are confident in buying there will be income in the future from more employment opportunities, higher home values and stock price increases. Even a small inflation can signal demand. Demand increases employment opportunities which stimulate even more demand. This is the part of the business cycle we would all like to live in ? the Expansion Phase. Unfortunately, a recession occurs and if the contraction is severe enough then a depression could occur. The difference between a recession and a depression can be found in their definitions. A recession is a time when business activity has reached its peak and starts to fall until the time when business activity bottoms out. A depression is a recession that lasts longer and has a larger decline in business activity. Thus the difference can be found by looking at the real GDP which declines by more than ten percent during a depression and less than ten in a recession. We know that some years, the economy is booming with growth and low unemployment rates while other years the economy and unemployment rate is not so great. The first pe rson to identify this as a Business Cycle was Arthur Burns and Wesley Mitchell. They wrote a book in 1946 titled Measuring Business Cycles which pointed out one of their key insights that many economic indicators move together. The term business cycle tends to be misleading because a cycle is a flow that continues with some timing or predictability. The business cycle has no set timing in its processing. As there is no regularity in the timing of the business cycle, one would think that there is not a reason why cycles occur in the first place. Business cycles do occur because disturbances to the economy of one sort or another push the economy above or below full employment. In this scenario I will be isolating Force as my variable. Force is directly related to the load on the wire; only multiplied by the gravitational pull (approx. 9. 81) as the load is measured in Kg as it is a mass. From the equation we can see that a change in Force will indeed affect the extension of the wire, at this stage it is apparent to say that; Theoretically the larger the force the greater the extension according to the equation above, as it is the value that is being divided. Following this it is also imperative that both the Cross sectional area of the wire is indeed accurately measured, as well as remaining constant through out the experiment, as a change in this value would indeed effect the value for Tensile stress, and in turn the extension. The length of the wire must also remain consistent through out the experiment. This is because each unit of wire will stretch or elongate by a proportional amount to the load being applied to it. Our society has not yet caught up to the Third Wave of feminism, which attempts to break down the traditional gender roles our constructions of work and family are based on. Many are hoping that government intervention through work policies that reflect the demands of an egalitarian family will be able to propel men and women out of the "stalled revolution". One must now address the question why the United States government is not following the lead of other industrialized nations if they are so supportive of "family values" and "moral values." Until there is a public outcry that can no longer be ignored, which is fast-approaching, the government can continue playing with words in order to avoid accountability. The problem exists with how these policies are categorized. The common term applied to such policies is "social benefits." This language alludes to the "social welfare state"-an ideal a liberal democracy like America does not strive to uphold. The American attitude for such concerns is usually along the lines of "you have your rights, now work it out for yourself." ~ The bighorn sheep is a species of sheep in North America named for it‘s large horns. ~ Their horns can weigh up to 30 pounds , while the sheep themselves weigh up to 300 pounds. ~ Ovis Canadensis is the scientific name of the bighorn sheep. ~ Male bighorn sheep or â€Å"rams† are easily identified by their large spiral horns which grow throughout their lives. An adult ram's horns may measure over 30 inches each in length and reach 15 inches in circumference at the base. Female bighorn or â€Å"ewes† have slender, straighter horns that grow throughout their lives to lengths of 8-10†³ for Rocky Mountain bighorn ewes and 12-17†³ for desert bighorn ewes. Young bighorn that are less than 1 year of age are referred to as lambs. ~ At the beginning of the nineteenth century, bighorn sheep in North America were estimated to number between 1.5 and 2 million, but today less than 70,000 remain. In the late 1800's, hunting, competition from livestock grazing, and diseases introduced by domestic livestock devastated bighorn populations. Although problems with domestic livestock are subsiding, they still exist and are now accompanied by accelerating habitat loss and human disturbance. Habitat loss and fragmentation are recognized as the most significant threats facing bighorn sheep today. Natural predation from mountain lions, coyotes and bobcats also pose a risk to bighorn populations that have dwindled to low numbers. ~ An entire subspecies of bighorn sheep, the Audubon bighorn, which inhabited parts of Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming and Nebraska was extirpated by 1925. At various times in the early 1900's, bighorn sheep were extirpated from the states of Washington, Oregon, Texas, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and the Mexican states of Chihuahua and Coahuila.Fortunately, many populations have been re-established through transplanting bighorn sheep from healthy populations to vacant habitat ~ Rams typically live 9-12 years, while ewes usually live 10-14 years ~ Although the diet of bighorn sheep varies according to the habitat and season, bighorn primarily eat grasses, shrubs, and forbs. Some favorite shrubs for desert bighorn sheep are acacia or catclaw, encelia, sweetbush, and krameria. Generally, bighorn sheep are opportunistic feeders that adapt their diet to the forage available. ~Mountain lions, wolves, bobcats, coyotes and golden eagles are predators of bighorn sheep. Eagles have been known to prey upon lambs, but they are unable to kill adult bighorn.
